Johnson, Smith Spoil Woodson's Return

Mike Woodson returned to Philips Arena for the first time as the newly minted Interim head coach of the New York Knicks. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith combined for 51 points to lead the Hawks to a 100-90 victory and give Larry Drew a win over his former boss.

The Knicks led briefly during the game following a dunk by Iman Shumpert. The former Georgia Tech star chipped in 25 points joining Carmelo Anthony (36 points) as the only Knicks players in double figures. Atlanta dominated the paint with Amare Stoudemire out of the line up due to a bulging disc. Zaza Pachulia collected 12 rebounds to give the Hawks a 40-33 advantage on the glass.

Whatever had the Hawks slumping Wednesday night they left it right there in the past. After allowing New York a brief lead early in the first, the Hawks went on a 15-6 run to end the quarter up 28-20. The lead expanded to a high of 15 before the Knicks stopped the bleeding at the tail end of the second quarter.

Anthony and Shumpert went on a scoring spree in the third combining for 23 of the Knicks 29 points to cut the Hawks lead to 5. The lead shrunk even more thanks to Anthony. The game high scorer knocked down a 3-pointer and converted technical foul shot to draw New York within two.

With the game on the line, Drew turned to Willie Green. It’s unlikely Louis Pasteur was thinking about hooping when he said, “chance favors the prepared mind”. And it’s equally unlikely Green was channeling Pasteur before he entered the game to start the fourth. Whatever was on his mind it was the right thing as the veteran guard scored 15 of his 20 points to close out the Knicks.
