Atlanta crept out to a 3-point lead in the first quarter on the strength of guard Jeff Teague’s 7 points and eight points from the bench. Blazers guard Wesley Matthews pumped in 10 more of his game high 28 points in the second quarter to help even the game going into halftime.
Josh Smith ignited a 14-3 run for the Hawks with back-to-back dunks just inside the 10 minute mark of the third quarter. Every team makes runs Portland’s just happened to occur on the heels of the Hawks run. Matthews scored 8 points in the last 5 minutes breathing life into the 18-10 run.
For most of the fourth quarter the teams battled with the scoring differential never exceeding 5 points. With 4 minutes to play the wheels came off the cart. An errant pass from Teague and three consecutive missed shots from Smith and the Hawks went from down 3 to down 9. The Hawks managed just 4 points in the final 2 minutes as the Blazers took the victory going away.
