A Thin Line Between Love and Hate

Love it or hate it, the NFL Pre-season is a necessary entrance to the much beloved 2012-13 season. After last year’s lock out, New Orleans' off-season Bounty-gate, and a draft that included two highly prized quarterback’s, Thursday night’s line-up couldn’t have come sooner. Its arrival gave way for teams like the Atlanta Falcons to begin working towards erasing a horrid showing in the post-season.

Most fans are accustomed to the starters playing one or two series of the first quarter before exchanging their helmets for a baseball hat or visor. Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, who have been inextricably linked and compared since coming into the league together in 2008, stayed around much longer than 10 plays.

Ryan participated in 23 plays over four series that included two touchdowns and one interception. Julio Jones made an acrobatic one-handed catch over Cary Williams for the Falcons first touchdown of the game. The drive covered 80 in just 8 plays.

Flacco saw 20 plays, mostly 3 and out before finally delivering a scoring drive in the second quarter. The fifth year starter connected on 6 of 7 passes including a 9 yarder to tight end Ed Dickson for a score.

Second, third and hopefuls looking to land with a team finished out the game. Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor took the reins for the visitors, while Chris Redman assumed quarterbacking duties for the home team. Taylor led three series going into halftime throwing for 64 yards on 8 of 17 passing but no scores. Redman didn’t fair nearly as well completing just 1 of 8 passes and looking more and more like a potential salary cap casualty.

Diminutive second year running back, Jacquizz Rodgers, carried the rushing load for the Dirty Birds. Rodgers carried 9 times for 33 yards that included a 2 yard touchdown run through several tacklers.

After just two series, fourth year QB John Parker Wilson replaced Redman and promptly led the Falcons to a field goal to end the half.

The rest of the game was a showcase for former Colts backup Curtis Painter. In six series under center Painter produced three scores. After a quick 3 and out, Wilson practically gift-wrapped the first touchdown for his counterpart in purple in black with a fumble at the Falcons 10. It took a couple of plays before Painter was able to hook up with Billy Bajema for a 4 yard touchdown.

Both teams went deep playing all of the quarterbacks on their respective depth charts. Chester Stewart, a rookie free agent out of Temple, closed out the night for the Ravens. East Carolina product Dominique Davis did the honors for the Falcons.
