Falcons New Offense Streams Points

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones scores against the Kansas City Chiefs secondary

Atlanta's Matt Ryan out-dueled Kansas City's Matt Cassel by two touchdowns and 41 passing yards to lift the Falcons to a season opening 40-24 win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

There was still quite a bit of speculation surrounding the new offense installed by the Falcons newly hired offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. “You know I think everybody has enjoyed working with Dirk,” said Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. “I think he has done a great job since he has been here and one game into it he did pretty well.”

It wasn’t necessary to peek into Koetter’s play book to know there were plenty of plays drawn up to take advantage of the three-headed receiver corps of Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Harry Douglas. Ryan found Jones three times for 44 yards and a touchdown to give the Falcons an early 7-0 lead.

“We came out very quickly, strongly, on offense,” remarked Atlanta head coach Mike Smith. “I think it took us a while to get going on defense”.

Cassel first drive, an 11-play 60 yarder, fizzled at the 21 forcing the Chiefs to settle for a 39 yard field goal from Ryan Succop. The eight year vet settled for nothing less than six the next time out. Trailing by seven, Cassel marched the Chiefs offense 54 yards in 8 plays to set up the score. Out of the shotgun he found tight end Kevin Boss on the inside seam for a touchdown. “Matt (Cassel) through me a good ball,” said Boss. “We’ve been working on that in practice”.

Both defenses struggled with getting stops early. By the end of the first half, Atlanta and Kansas City had combined for 454 yards of offense and thirty-seven points.

“I thought we made some very good adjustments on the defensive side of the ball at halftime,” said Coach Smith. The improved play of Atlanta’s defense allowed the offense to keep chugging right along.

The Chiefs defense failed to answer the bell. “Defensively, we weren't able to stop them and they were able to throw the ball consistently,” said Kansas City head coach Romeo Crennel.

Atlanta scored two touchdowns in the span of about one minute. Ryan scored the Falcons first touchdown of the second half on a 5 yard run. Defensive end John Abraham set up the next score sacking Cassel and forcing a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Stephen Nicholas at the Kansas City 7.

Ryan made short work of the Chiefs defense connecting with Tony Gonzalez for the score. For old times’ sake, Gonzalez unleashed his trademark goal post dunk.

Interceptions by Falcons safety William Moore and linebacker Stephen Nicholas ended the Chiefs next two drives and sealed the road victory for Atlanta.
