The AFC North’s Cincinnati Bengals, a 2012 Wildcard, rolled into Flowery Branch Monday for a pair of combined team practices with the Atlanta Falcons prior to their preseason game later in the week.
Head coaches Mike Smith-Atlanta and Marvin Lewis-Cincinnati hashed out the details of how the practice would flow over the phone. “I don’t think there will be anything out there that wouldn’t be shown any other week,” said Smith of the practice that would be recorded for use in HBOs Hard Knocks series on the Bengals.
Practice was spirited as players on both teams whooped it up after a big play was made. Falcons’ quarterbacks Matt Ryan and Dominique Davis looked particularly sharp against the Bengals secondary in 7-on-7 drills during both sessions. The Bengals’ Andy Dalton looked sharper in the second set of passing drills. Both teams were without primary targets for the practice. Bengals WR A.J. Green did not make the trip due to a knee bruise suffered in practice and Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez has not arrived to training camp due to family commitments.
Smiles reigned supreme as players on both sides delivered some good natured smack talk.
When the horn sounded ending the first of two combined practice days, players from both teams headed to the sideline to engage the fans.
