Panthers Pounded by Unimpressive Bulldogs

Rookie Dominic Davis shines

Final scores aren’t always good indicators for a game and South Carolina State’s 33-6 win over Georgia State Thursday night in the Georgia Dome is proof of that.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the contest was a minute old. Redshirt junior quarterback Richard Cue tossed a strike to receiver Lennel Elmore for a 72 yard score.

SCSU head coach Buddy Pough agreed to the pivotal nature of the play. “The first touchdown pass was a big break for us because it let us play the rest of the game from ahead and the longer our defense kept them contained, the more confidence we got," said Pough.

Elmore’s score was the ying to Panthers place kicker Matt Ehasz’s yang. Ehasz missed a 24 yard field goal attempt in the second half that would have narrowed the Bulldogs lead to 7-6.

It was the second missed opportunity for the Panthers to score points in the redzone.

Truthfully, Ehasz should not have been called upon to try and salvage the drive.

Cornerback Brent McClendon picked off Richard Cue at the 42 yard line to give the ball back to the offense at the SCSU 23.

Enter Kelton Hill at quarterback. Hill, who also played in the Panthers secondary, called his own number on four straight plays to get down to the 5. The drive would go no farther as NG Javon Hargrave tackled Donald Russell for a loss of two on third and two.

“We had a chance to go in and make it the kind of football game we all thought it would be which is nip and tuck to the end,” said Curry.

The real difference in the game boiled down to how each team took advantage of the other’s mistakes.

With less than a minute to play, Bulldogs Justin Hughes sacked starting quarterback Ben McLane and caused a fumble the linebacker was able to recover.

Cue capitalized quickly finding Tyler McDonald down the sideline for a 22 yard touchdown just before the half expired. Panthers cornerback Demarius Matthews attempted to make a play underneath on the pass allowing McDonald to get behind him for the touchdown.

A new half saw new energy from the Panthers squad. Hill and Russell took turns moving the chains on the ground and through the air. Once inside the ten yard line, the miscues returned. This time the miscues were of the yellow flag variety.

A false start and a holding penalty turned a first and goal at the 7 into a third and goal from the 12.

Ehasz lead whittling 25 yard field goal was didn’t last long enough for the offense to get another bite at the apple. Cue orchestrated the first solid offensive series for SCSU, a 9 play 73 yard scoring drive.

Mixing in the run with the pass, Cue and the offense churned butter all the way to the GSU 7. After a 6 yard loss, Cue hit a leaping McDonald again at the goal line for six more.

The remaining 13 points, including the 68 yard fumble recovery, were pretty much sprinkles and frosting on the cake.

Coach Pough gave the win a thumbs up, "it was a good starting game for us and a place to get going with a positive feeling about our season".
